The Belly Remembers

Massage is often thought of as a luxury, but in truth it is one of the oldest forms of healing support. Through intentional touch, the nervous system begins to soften, breath deepens, muscles release, and the body remembers that it is safe to rest.

Many people carry stress not only in their shoulders or neck, but deep within the belly. The abdomen is more than a place of digestion — it is also a center of feeling, intuition, and emotional processing. When we are overwhelmed by life, constantly “holding it together,” or unable to fully process our experiences, the body often responds by tightening, bracing, or shutting down.

Over time this can affect physical digestion as well. Stress and emotional overload may contribute to bloating, tension, shallow breathing, sluggish digestion, or discomfort in the gut. In somatic healing traditions, we sometimes speak about the difficulty of “digesting life” itself — the unprocessed emotions, chronic stress, grief, fear, or pressure the body has been carrying for too long.

Massage invites movement where there has been holding. Presence where there has been disconnection. Gentle abdominal and nervous system-focused work can support circulation, relaxation, breath, and a greater sense of connection to the body from within.

Healing does not always begin with words.

Sometimes it begins with exhaling.

Softening.

Receiving support.

And slowly coming home to yourself again.
